Wrong Signals...

Dear Shell,

I came across your website and was hopeful that someone could offer me advice in overcoming my heart break.

Last year, I got to know a dentist as I need to remove my wisdom tooth. He was a warm, kind and gentle man. I had a good impression of him.

The second time I saw him to remove my stitches. It was then when he asked me what I am doing during the weekend. I told him that I was free and he did not probe further. It sent my heart into flutters. Was he interested to know me more?

I went to visit him several times. He seemed to enjoy talking to me, we chatted and I found that that he is still single. The problem with him is that each time I met him for an appointment, he did not try to ask me out again.

Recently, I found out that he went abroad to further his studies and he will be gone for 3 years. The bombshell dropped when I found out from his nurse that he is actually married. I was upset because it was unexpected and I could handle the shock. I liked him very much and hoped that it could have blossomed into something more.

I do need advice to help me to widen my perspective of this problem. Could you help me?

Despair

Dear Despair,

Hello and thank you for writing in to me. I am sorry your heart is aching right now.  Based on what you are telling me it seems as if you may have misinterpreted your dentists intentions.  My doctor always makes small talk during our visits and often asks what my plans are, etc.  It is very easy to take this as a sign of interest. It sounds like your dentist did the appropriate thing in NOT pursuing a relationship, it would be unethical for him to do so. At least here in the states.

I know how it hurts to like someone, for them to be part of our daydreams and the reason our hearts flutter only to find out it isn't going to be. I do believe that this will pass for you and with a heart that is capable of loving as much as yours seems to be, God is going to bless you with the perfect partner. One you can call your own and one that you will have NO WONDER about his intentions.  I pray your angel will come soon.

Love, Shell
